Helicopter gunships, such as the Super Cobra illustrated below, are medium-armed, rotary-wing combat aircraft especially effective against soft or lightly-armored targets such as infantry. Usually equipped with heavy machine guns and missile pods, these helicopters evade most radar detection by flying low altitude, Nap-of-the-Earth (NOE) courses that use geographical features such as valleys or ravines to avoid detection.
Helicopter gunships are capable of being carrier-based.
